Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon From the Rogue website: A Collision of Crazies. Rogue Ales has again collided with Voodoo Doughnut to create Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale! STYLE: Doughnut Ale -- FOOD PAIRING: Dessert, Doughnuts -- 14 INGREDIENTS: Malts: 2-Row, Munich, C120, Chocolate, Black, Kiln Coffee & Rogue Farms Dare™ and Risk™ Malts -- Hops: Rogue Farms Rebel Hops™ -- Adjuncts: Pretzels, Raspberry Extract, Chocolate -- Yeast & water: Pacman Yeast & Free Range Coastal Water This is 5.4% ABV and 31 IBUs in a painted 25.4 oz. bottle. While Rogue calls this a Doughnut Ale, Beer Advocate calls it an American Brown Ale. This is the first of the Doughnut Ales from Rogue that I have tasted. Two previous Doughnut ales were Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale and Voodoo Doughnut Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Ale. This brew is inspired by and is supposed to emulate the taste of the Voodoo Doll doughnut, a raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake from Voodoo Doughnuts. This guy pours black and opaque with average foam and thin lacing. Muted aromas of sweet malts waft up out of the glass. This is one wild ride with a lot of craziness. The mouth feel is medium and slick. While there is an underlying bitterness, it is more of a bittersweet chocolate thing than it is hops. Loads of flavors keep you tasting. I could drink this with doughnuts for breakfast. Milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, some caramel, and dark fruits immediately take center stage. Then the raspberry kicks in (much more evident after this warms) - and then you get the pretzel. Just crazy. This is a novelty beer. They should give you a tee shirt when you buy this, which says Been There, Done That, Got The Tee Shirt with a picture of the beer bottle on the shirt. Why? Well, this is fun to drink, but it is really not a serious beer. It is good and it is very interesting, but not something you going to fill your beer fridge with for everyday drinking. It is very much worth it to try it once. You will be surprised at how much it tastes like it says it tastes. On a final note, I would really love to try the namesake doughnut that inspired this brew!
