WA Retired Nurse and Social Worker charged with trespass over Buru Energy climate occupation Cathy Hall, aged 66, and Trish McAuliffe, aged 74 today pled guilty and were charged with trespass after their peaceful occupation of Buru Energy Headquarters in Perth on 21st October. The two women occupied the offices with eight others in protest of Buru Energy’s plans to conduct fracking in the precious Kimberley. The action was done in solidarity with a group of Pacific Climate Warriors from 12 Pacific Island nations who came to Australia to campaign against the impacts of Australia’s coal and gas exports on their homes. The two received a 3 month good behaviour bond and were ordered to pay costs of $79. Cathy Hall a retired nurse from Fremantle participated in the protest to stand with Pacific Climate Warriors who were fighting for the survival of their islands. “For the Pacific Climate Warriors, this battle was a move to shift attention away from the sense of inevitable loss to be wreaked upon Pacific Islands by climate change, to directly challenging and halting the very activities that are causing climate change. “Buru’s plans to frack in the Kimberley will not only significantly impact that precious region, but as one of the largest new fossil fuel projects in the state will significantly increase greenhouse pollution, hurting the Pacific Warriors. “This is what motivates me to stand and speak with people like the Pacific Islanders who are not yet being heard in the places where it matters.” Trish McAuliffe said that she and Cathy would accept the consequences of their action: “We knew what we were doing was serious when we participated in this protest. Yet, nothing is more serious than the impacts climate change is having on millions of people around the world. “The tiny disruption we caused Buru Energy on the day is nothing like the disruption their plans could cause in both the Kimberley and around the world. “We regret that there was such a need to take this kind of action to get our message through to the fossil fuel industry however we will continue to fight Buru Energy’s plans to Frack for unconventional gas across the Kimberley.” Cathy and Trish received strong character references from prominent West Australians including Professor Peter Newman, Hon Melissa Parke MP, Mayor Brad Petitt and retired Police Officer and former Minister for Education Kay Hallahan. In handing down their sentence the Magistrate recognised their contribution to society and stated I understand why you have taken the action you did https://au.news.yahoo/thewest/a/25311790/protesters-occupy-buru-energy/
