WELCH WINS AT RUSHWORTH Bendigo’s Peter Welch put in a great performance at the Goulburn Valley Auto Club’s Rushworth Speedway on Saturday night, to take out the Final of the GV Open Men’s event. Debuting the black AU V8 Falcon following a serious suspension rebuild over the off-season, Welch claimed pole position ahead of Chris “Dominator” Denton, and GV1 driver Jay Nicolaisen. The much anticipated clash between Denton, driving a 302 Ford and Club President Phil Lamb in his 350 Chev-powered Open Saloon failed to eventuate when Lamb became involved in a mid-corner crash in the heats, which resulted in severe damage to the car, and sidelines several others. In the final, Welch gained the jump on Denton and pulled out an early lead of about 20 metres. Nicolaisen in his V6 Commodore was engaged in a spirited battle with Denton when they too became involved in a crash on the same corner which saw the demise of Lamb earlier. Damage to Denton excluded him from the race, and Nicolaisen suffered a flat front tyre, putting him out also. The re-start left Welch out in front, and he took the chequered flag ahead of Kyabram’s Harley Nicolaisen with Wayne “Chugga” Gilsenan in third. The GV Production Sedans were still racing with the GV Opens until competitor numbers build over the next couple of meetings. Final placings were Troy Britton (GV41) followed by Ash Brown in GV68, which is obviously handling better after a suspension re-build, and Aaron Bunton driving GV87. Despite limited specifications the Productions are proving to now be extremely competitive in Open Company. The spectacular V8 Dirt Modifieds also provided great action, and with two “Tindals” (Harley in car 78 and Paul in car 17) competing and Darren Tindal commentating the V8’s events, spectators became very familiar with the name! Some great and spirited competition during the heats added to the action, and also proved the demise of a couple of cars. However, a very respectable field greeted the starter’s flag for the final, with Daryl Hickson (Vic 92) dominating ahead of Paul Tindal, and Harley Tindal completing the podium. The next race meeting at Rushworth Speedway is 13th December, featuring a return of the Super Sedans and Compact Speedcars together with local GV Sedan Classes.
