WELLNESS WEDNESDAY On confidence and achievement By Valary Mumbo How many times in your life have you failed to do something you wanted to as a result of fear? How did you feel letting fear stand in the way? I recently read a quote, whose author I am yet to find out, it said: “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” This doubt is bred by fear: mostly fear that you’ll fail and that of what others may think. However, how will you know, whether your dream will be a success or not, if you never try? Also, people who try to put you down will always be there, but you will be shocked that an even greater number want to see you succeed. Therefore, here are three pointers I hope will be a confidence boost in the direction of your next great achievement. 1.Perseverance often wins the race. If you have tried working towards your dreams a couple of times without success, find out what mistakes you had made previously and try again! Most successful people will attest to failing a couple of times before their ‘big break’. The example that most commonly comes to mind is that of Thomas Edison and the light bulb; it is said he tried 1000 times, and failed, but was successful on his 1001th trial. Every time you see a glowing light bulb, be encouraged. 2.There is enough success to go around. No one has monopoly over success, neither is it for a chosen few; just because someone else has succeeded do not fear that the supply of success has run short and therefore, there is none left for you. On the contrary, use the person’s example as confidence boost that you too can succeed. After all, who are you not to? 3.What your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Set a plan and work towards your goal. I am a strong believer in the fact that we have within our reach the resources to achieve whatever it is we aspire to, if we only put the proverbial best foot forward. This may involve a lot of sacrifice but, if you are truly committed to making your dream a reality, it is a small price to pay for the joy that will come once your efforts bear fruit. And as Oprah said, “It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you came from. The ability to triumph begins with you, always.” Harness it! I, too, am a work-in-progress in practicing this thing called confidence. Every day, I acknowledge all the things I have been successful at, however little, and this goes a long way in making me believe I can achieve greater things. Try it! Whether it is a sum you got right, a meal you prepared well or a completed to-do list, it counts. It is also nice to make a habit of congratulating people on their success and acknowledging their work well done, so that their confidence, too, is boosted. Have a lovely day and as Henry David Thoreau said, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
