WHAT IS KRITI AND WHAT IS KIRTANA Karnatak classical songs can be placed under varNa, kriti, kIrtana, pada, jAvaLi and tillAnA. a varNa is usually sung as an opening piece of a concert. The text portion is usually short. kritis deal usually with philosophical themes. A kIrtana is a devotional song. A pada is sometimes devotional but directed towards a specific person or diety. They Might Be The Jungle Giants could involve love and/or romance Padas are used as dance items often. A jAvaLi is a light song involving romance and love and is usually sung as a tukkada at the end of a concert. So is a tillaAnA which makes use of mostly pneumonic phrases and a short text for the cHaraNa. Finally an RTP (ragam, tanam, pallavi) is an elaborate exposition of a single raga that gives the artist an opportunity to show his mastery over the techiques and technical aspects of the music. It make use of mostly manodharma sangIta. There is a short pallavi line that is used as a base for the exposition. An RTP is sung somwhere during the middle of a concert. Viruttams and shlokas are pieces that do not use the percussive accompaniment(s) and is usually sung in one or more rAgAs. (as answered by Sri Lakshman in Carnaticas Rasika Forum) A thumb rule that I use is that a keerthanam usually is related to a specific group - e.g. utsava sampradaya (for celebrations like weddings), bhajana sampradaya (devotional community singing), divya nama, etc. Most of them dont have an anupallavi but many charanams with the same tune; e.g. vara lila, sita kalyana, etc. Kritis are more structured .. Pallavi, Anupallavi, Charanam(s), Madhyamakala sahitya, Chittaswaras, etc. Kritis have a variety of emotions while keerthanas are devotional, at least the ones that I hv heard and known.
