WHAT IS THE VALUE OF LIFE HERE...? July 7, 2005 otherwise tagged July7/7 would be remembered as the day Britain witnessed and experienced her fair share of terrorism--putting aside the air strike over Lockerbie in Scotland some years before... That morning, the world almost came to a stand-still. Four British Islamist(terrorists) detonated four bombs in quick succession across London subways--three of these bombs went off simultaneously and the fourth later exploded in a commuter double decker bus... Within hours of these happenings, the suicide bombers identities were made public and the total number of dead victims put at 52 excluding the four cowardly bombers...those injured from the four blasts were estimated to be 700... The speed with which the government and security agencies swung into action and the world rallied round the people of United Kingdom was enviable... 72 hours later, the names of the dead were published after thorough screening and absolute certainty...(You can still access this list via wikipedia anytime)... Since the unfortunate sect--Boko Haram reared its monster-hydra-head in Nigeria, several lives have snuffed short... Almost on a daily basis, we read and hear about the dastardly act of the group: A typical headline would read...Boko Haram slaughters 53 in Yadada village near Borno At another time, you would read: Insurgent kills 48 in a school in Yobe..., JTF kill 72 Boko Haram members, Boko Haram ambushed and slaughtered 63 soldiers, Boko Haram killed 45 in Sarasara village near Adamawa... I have often wondered if these are human beings or goats or mere statistics...(Aside from the bomb blasts in Abuja and its environ--how come we dont the bodies and pictures of these people...?) Who are these people...where are their pictures or bodies...? The journalists who report these incidents, dont they have cameras or are their reports based on hearsay...who took count of the bodies? If you put into account that over 250 children were purportedly kidnapped or abducted by terrorists for over 2 months now and it seems nothing serious is being done by the government of the day to rescue the them; other than mere talk and promising speeches here and there, you begin to seriously wonder the value placed on human life in Nigeria... It has become the norm-- our sense of humanity has been bruised and battered to the extent that these figures are just statistics-meaningless lingo... The fear of most people is that, one day we might wake to the news that a whole state has been wiped out and it would still be the same cheap talk and promises... Life has become brutish, nasty and short in some part of this country-- I hope the trend will not creep to the entire nation because life seem very cheap in this part of the world!
