WHAT WE DID IN SMALL TOWN EVERY FRIDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT! Driving the strip on weekends consisted of up and down Market Street, Main Street, Alamo Street, and Park Street out to the north end of town ... as well as the often-used Austin Street ... Day Street ... Stone Street ... and a few others to kill the boredom and to meet up with others of our peer group doing the same thing. We would cruise one way ... get to the end ... then turn around ... and cruise back up to the other end ... This endless routine could go on for quite a spell ... Sometimes, we would even drive out toward The Starlite Drive-In Theater to see who might be turning in for the show. If the mood struck us, we would go ahead and pay to see the movie, too. Those of us with dates would be out there early to grab our favorite spot and begin the make-out session. This was a rite of passage for youth in Small Town. But --- back to the cruising ... Of course, to help break the monotony, we also would stop in at either Schultzes (cant ever remember which spelling was correct, so many versions of this German name) Drive-In or K&N Root Beer Stand, across the street from each other at the eastern end of South Market, before it turned into Highway 290 ... Some would also hop from car to car during the evening, riding first with this group, then with another, and maybe even another. At the other other end (north) we might stop in at the hamburger joint out all by itself. I forget the name of it, but I think the Juergens family had it at one time. May be mistaken. What was that little snack place called? Anyway, we would occasionally pull in there and grab a bite or beverage. And ... for the very adventurous among our peers, it was a trip to Bellville and Schroeders Drive-In. Had to be careful about this because of the rivalry between Brenham and Bellville. Many a fight (mostly over girls) would result at that spot on weekends. Oh, the hormones that raged in our younger days. Also had to be careful of Sheriff Maddox and his infamous speed traps at Bellville. They had the weirdest speed limits that actually went up and down all within a very short distance, guaranteed to get you in the trap and a ticket! (Kids dont pay attention to speed limit signs and the law knew it.) Yep. Cruisin was the game we loved to play on Friday and Saturday nights in and around Small Town ... What else was there to do? (Well, okay. Yes, there was another thing to do. But, you had to have a date and a special secret spot to engage in that social event. Many of us did. Yet --- THATS another story altogether, dear Banana Heads ... Another story for another time .... :)
