WHAT’S SOPHIE UP TO? A SUMMER EVENING IN BERWYN Summertime in - TopicsExpress

WHAT’S SOPHIE UP TO? A SUMMER EVENING IN BERWYN Summertime in Philly, now that the humidity and thunder storms have abated, is as good as it gets anywhere on the planet. Suburban Philadelphia where centuries old oak, elm and maple trees are at their very best and often form green tunnels that shade the small winding roads which connect this huge metropolis. Acre plots of magnificent lawns and gardens with stately homes - some stone, some timber – set in the center, many with flagpoles flying the ‘Stars and Stripes’, is as close to the American Dream as I’ve seen. And this goes on and on, up gentle hills and down dales where babbling brooks determined, centuries ago, where these little back roads meandered. Stones from these brooks were used to build many houses around here. Last night my daughter and her partner and I spent a few delightful hours sitting around the dining table outside on the deck of their hilltop house where towering oaks and elms filtered the moonlight. As the champagne cork popped and flutes were filled, a chorus of crickets provided the music, like a mantra - the familiar sounds of home. It was a wonderful night of storytelling and forecasting our futures as we tackled three fierce looking lobsters with skill, nutcrackers and miniature forks on long handles. The thrill of extracting the white flesh from the big front claws, in one piece, added to our enjoyment. Freshly sliced home-grown tomatoes and basil leaves flavored with a touch of olive oil, complimented the lobster. Finger bowls and large damask linen napkins came in handy as we all worked our way through this simple yet magnificent meal. As the night went on the stars came out en masse, the crickets went to sleep, and not a sound could be heard. We might have been the only people on the planet apart from a silent jet plane so high up it might have been heading for heaven. oOo
