WHEN PARENTS LOVE TOO MUCH. Whenever a small group of young people start doing really dumb things - like the #FireChallenge fb.me/6CGkLGev0 - news outlets and safety officials are always there with the urgent warnings and a call to action for parents. Take yesterdays story from CBS Denver, where #Colorado’s top fire officials have issued a warning about a dangerous and disturbing trend and they want parents to talk with their kids. They want parents to sit their kids down for an actual discussion about why its not a good thing to strip down, douse yourself in flammable liquids, and set yourself on fire because someone on the Internet challenged you. -- cbsloc.al/1qHO0i6 Is this really a good thing? Granted, some kids might actually appreciate the apparent concern for their well-being, and they might even feel little butterflies in their tummy as rainbows dance over the family home while you bond, but what about all the other kids who see this for what it really is? Its a slap in the face. Beneath that love and concern, youre telling them that you heard about really dumb people doing really dumb things, and youre concerned that theyre just as dumb. Its OK to do that once in a blue moon, but if you keep following such advice for every random disturbing trend from a select group of asshats, theres a fair chance youll cause more harm than good. I have no faith in you and think you might be stupid. [smack] I have no faith in you and think you might be stupid. [smack] I have no faith in you and think you might be stupid. [smack] Theres a limited number of times that a young person can sit on the couch for these degrading lectures from mom and dad before more legitimate concerns are simply impossible to address. Its hard to maintain one of those open, loving, and high-quality bonds that people seem so fond of today, when 1/2 the bond is with someone who always thinks of you as a complete idiot. Sometimes the best #parenting style is about letting nature take its course.
