WHERE IS THE PULPIT? Last nite on another wall, I read a few preachers bemoaning the disappearance of the pulpit in many churches. They were distressed and see this as a sign of the diminishing authority of the Bible. They believe that the loss of THE SACRED DESK is a sign of liberalism in our teaching and preaching. I am happy to say that is not the case, my friends. What we tie to the Anointing can be just our cultural traditions, our habits, the way we prefer to see things. It can become nothing more than human religion, when we marry our traditions to what we insist must be present for GOD to speak. A little history may help. The Apostle Peter never once used a pulpit to preach or teach. The Apostle Paul never stood behind the SACRED DESK. The LORD Jesus Christ never once met a pulpit. Now, there is nothing wrong with using a pulpit, podium, preachers desk or lectern to hold your notes. There is nothing wrong with using a table for the same purpose. And there is certainly no less anointing or authority when I preach the Word using no form of pulpit at all. That is my personal preference, and it demands that I am much better prepared to preach then when I can have a binder full of notes on a lectern.:-) I also remember that there was a time in history when the pulpit was used to keep the Word from seekers. The Bible was chained to THE SACRED DESK to keep it out of the hands of the commoner. We are so easily distracted by meaningless issues that we make to mean something when they are less than trivial. Our brothers and sisters are being crucified and beheaded by Islamic jihadists. That is something to get worked up about. Pastor Myles Holmes
