WHO ARE WE IN THE STORM? One might find it pertinent to ask: where is the Lord during the storm? But the Lord has never distanced Himself from us nor from our troubles. Our storms are not irrelevant to Him. And though He appears to be asleep on the stern...He is the Captain alertly steering the ship to safety. In our fear of the unknown we often accuse Him of not doing enough. Of turning His face away from our prayers. Of failing to supply our essential needs. However, it is during these times when we learn: not just who Christ is in us, but who we are in Christ. Who are we in Christ? Are we fearful servants of little faith? Or are we faithful servants of little fear? Wind and Wave Obey Jesus Mark 4:35-41 New King James Version 35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”[d] 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” Matthew Henrys Concise Commentary 4:35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, dont speak. When all around us are struggles, and all throughout us are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult: if he says, Peace, be still, there is a great calm at once. Why are ye so fearful? Though there may be cause for some fear, yet not for such fear as this. Those may suspect their faith, who can have such a thought as that Jesus cares not though his people perish. How imperfect are the best of saints! Faith and fear take their turns while we are in this world; but before long, fear will be overcome, and faith will be lost in seeing God face to face and in knowing Him just as we are fully known. Im asking you to place your faith fully in the Lord and rest it there. Do not be moved. Stand your ground firmly. Know that your God, your Savior has already ransomed you from the worst fate of them all: eternal damnation. Why so, would your Father not also calm any storm that threatens to wipe you completely out? True, we might get wounded. Knocked down. Persecuted and vilified. Nonetheless, we will not perish. We will not suffer defeat. We will overcome and persevere. Because Christ is our victory! AMEN! Who are we in the storm? We are more than conquerors (through Christ who loved us), thats who. Always remember that. May God bless you and agape.
