WHO DIED TODAY... THE WESTERN UNKNOWN, 1805 - The Lewis and Clark expedition reaches the Pacific coast. They had left St. Louis in May of 1804 to find a water path to the ocean and record what they saw along the way. They were the first easterners to cross the unknown of the US interior. GILBERT SMYLIE DIDNT, 1915 - Smylie, a British pilot in WWI was flying one of two planes on a bombing mission. His plane developed engine trouble, and he had to crash land behind enemy lines. The other pilot Richard Davies swooped down and landed in the field and - with the plane still rolling - Smylie jumped in as enemy fire ripped all around them and enemy troops were closing in. It was one of those things you see in movies all the time, but almost never really happens. THE JAPANESE AUTO INDUSTRY- NOT!, 1993 - Chevy starts selling Cavaliers in Japan. So they really thought Japanese people would pass on Civics, Accords, and Corollas and Camrys to buy a Cavalier. No offence to Cavalier owners, but that nuts! THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, 1703 - No really knows who he was because no one ever saw his face. The mask was actually black cloth, not iron, but still for the entire 34 years that he was in various French prisons he wore the mask, and was told that if he ever told his identity to anyone that he would be killed. Possible identities are speculated but no one really knows. According to one of his jailers he was described as quiet and at peace disposed to the will of God and to the king. I hope that peace was because he knew Christ as his Savior.
