WHY A SPURS CHAMPIONSHIP IS BEST FOR EVERYONE IN - TopicsExpress

WHY A SPURS CHAMPIONSHIP IS BEST FOR EVERYONE IN BASKETBALL Barring a miracle and a monumental collapse from the NBAs best team, the San Antonio Spurs will most likely be the 2014 NBA champions. Although we have been accustomed by the dominance of this team for decades it still comes as a shock how they have dominated this season with offensive efficiency. The San Antonio Spurs is a solid defensive team, but is not their defense that wins them games, its their offensive system that literally breaks a teams morale because it seemingly cannot be stopped. Their offensive execution is truly a masterpiece of ball movement, teamwork and unselfish plays. The ball and players never stop moving until a great shot is available, their passing keeps the defensive players a step or two late on the rotations. Meanwhile their consistency just wears you out, and sucks the energy out of the opposing teams morale. How devastating is this offense? Consider this, the Miami heat is probably the most confident team in the NBA with back to back championship and their big three of Lebron, Bosh, and Wade, this team was primed to three peat, but often times, they looked beaten and dominated, because whatever they do, the spurs seems to find an opening in their defense. Its really frustrating to be seemingly tricked on every possession and as the frustrations add up the Miami heat slowly unfold. The superior talent of the the Miami heat should have been the dominating factor in the is championship, but as the spurs have shown so far, talent isnt everything. The ascendance of the SPURS can only mean great things for basketball, slowly ball movement, hitting the open, passing a good shot for a great shot are starting to be cool. Too often aspiring basketball players get caught up with highlight plays of dunks, crossovers, and acrobatic shots that they loose sight of the fundamentals of basketball. You cant blame them as the NBA is a heroes league, from the greatness of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Lebron James, etc., its their success that is being marketed and not the team. Thankfully the Spurs are trying to buck that trend, and a fifth championship for the spurs might be the breakthrough that team basketball deserves. Just recently while playing basketball in our village playground, Ive noticed that young players were actually emulating the spurs, everybody was trying to make the extra pass. And while previously youd hear praises for a great Allen Iverson crossover move, now youd applause on great ball movement where everyone got to touch the ball before taking a shot. It was really a revelation to watch this bunch of playground kids to display team chemistry and unselfishness all because the spurs have suddenly made it cool to play team basketball. So when game 5 of the NBA finals tomorrow, I hope the basketball gods would be rooting for the San Antonio Spurs, if they want whats best for basketball.
