WHY THE SMARTEST CLUB? A lecture by Lawyer Emmanuel Abdulai-Saffia, Momodu Jalloh, Messeh Leone & Chernoh Musa Barrie of the SMARTEST Club So, the new year awakes to the wicked call for government to regulate social media. This ill-informed call comes at the same time when the obnoxious seditious and criminal libel law continues to vexingly chill free speech. While the world is moving towards taking free expression as a guaranteed rights, we are stock in the dark ages of using the libel law as intimidatory tool against journalist. I realized the call is louder from the governments spinning team the more. What has changed over the past seven years that freedom of expression is now violently attacked considering the role social media played in both 2007 and 2012 elections? Just to remind the overzealous, this is the 21st century and not 1965 when the draconian libel laws were passed. Let this go as social media would hard to regulate....speech does not have to favorable to be tolerated, it can offensive and shocking, Lawyer Emmanuel Abdulai-Saffia Allow me to educate you: Temple is absolutely wrong! You got it all wrong, Editayo George Temple. We all know social media is a powerful tool that has many professional and personal advantages. While you do have control over your online presence, however , you typically lack control over what others say about you on social media. The larger your presence, the more likely you are exposing yourself to feedback – both positive and negative. Even if you haven’t establish your social-media presence, you run the risk of being exposed to one of social media’s dark sides: the personal attack. Anybody can be a publisher — or an attacker . When you’re attacked on social media, it can feel like the community has already made its mind up about you until you can prove your innocence. In the past, traditional media typically filtered mass messages to particular audiences, limiting the likelihood of harm as well as its effects. Now, anyone is a publisher to unlimited, worldwide audiences. This greatly increases the potential for harm. In this environment of instantaneous outbursts of micro-messages, the damage is done the instant something is tweeted or posted online. What is posted online can also be reposted and continue to live long after the original message has been deleted. Those attacked now have a greater need to minimise harm to their reputation, and to do so quickly. The form of the harm can be much more complicated too. People can incorrectly take a comment you made out of context (which in some states could potentially be ground for a false light claim); they can share hurtful opinions (which are generally protected speech under defamation law); or expose a truth that is less than flattering to you (a statement isn’t defamatory if true). Or people can just be downright mean, Momodu Jalloh Temple is absolutely wrong! I am not sure how this is possible . Even China, UK and USA can not and have been unable to regulate social media, but only corrupt leaders and DICTATORS in Africa are afraid of social media. How can someone who does not live in Sierra Leone be regulated ?
