WICKETS FOR PACERS IN TEST WARM-UP CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – The West Indies bowlers who arrived early in New Zealand made solid progress on the opening day of their tour match against a New Zealand XI in Lincoln on Wednesday. The tourists ousted Black Caps opener Peter Fulton for one and national captain Brendon McCullum for 22 after the New Zealanders won the toss and elected to bat. The hosts declared at 227 for eight at stumps on a rain-interrupted day, with Hamish Rutherford top-scoring on 61. Sheldon Cotrell (2-63) and Shannon Gabriel (2-50) were the pick of the West Indies bowlers, both bowled with good pace and troubled the home batsmen, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul also had a brief go with his slow bowling. There were also two catches for Chadwick Walton behind the stumps. The West Indian team contains four New Zealanders, who were drafted in to make up the numbers as the rest of the Caribbean side wrapped up a One-Day series in India. As such, it is not being recognised as a first-class fixture. The first of three Tests begins next Tuesday at the University Oval in Dunedin.
