WILLIAM ANDERSON "Devil Anse" HATFIELD Randolph McCoy, patriarch of his family, once called this man "six foot of devil and 180 pounds of hell." Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, 62-years-old when this image was taken, was once described in 1948 by Virgil Carrington Jones in his book, "The Hatfields and McCoys," as an ex-captain of the Confederate Army, a bearded six-footer, a Stonewall Jackson type ... eyes gray and deep set below bushy eyebrows ... and a nose hooked like a scimitar [a curved Asian sword]. —This image was taken from The American Journal of Sociology, in 1901.
