WINNING EACH DAY DEVOTIONAL 2 Chor 2:14 And thanks be to God who ALWAYS causes us to triumph… May 13, 2014 MOTIVES Proverbs 16:2 (CEV) We may think we know what is right, but the Lord is the judge of our motives. One of the major attributes of man is to think he knows what is right. Man has always been in this realm where he thinks he knows more than God since the day he was created. For instance, we seem sometimes to outsmart God by thinking we can just bring half of our tithes to God instead of all and that God understands. The word “motive” can best be described as the reason behind our behaviour. Observe that a motive is not our behavior, but it explains why we act the way we do. If I want to understand my life better, as much as possible I should try to understand my motive. One of the major problems God has is that some people are drawing near to Him with their mouth but their hearts are far from Him. They came to church, they heard the Word but in their minds they knew they were not going to practice the Word. However, God being the Wise Judge makes no error of judging man by his actions only. This is because man could mean something deep within but act differently. God decided to judge man by motives. God goes beyond the action to see why you have done it. God never had problems with Cain’s offerings but the reason behind his offerings. Proverbs 21:27 (CEV) The Lord despises the offerings of wicked people with evil motives. When something happens, God digs into the reason why it happens. Be eager to serve the Lord. When your mouth is saying something different from what’s in your heart, you are getting God confused by speaking the language of unbelief. Confession: I have the mind of Christ! Prayer: Lord, purge my motives until I become completely like you in Jesus’ name! Further Reading: Proverbs 21:27, 1 Chronicles 28:9, Revelation 2:23
