WMN: In My Opinion: UKIP is the party of common sense Toby Maidment writing in WMN says UKIP cannot pretend they are not a nasty right wing party (October 30). UKIP don’t try to pretend anything. UKIP are not what he says we are. I have been a member of UKIP for 12 years and we have been roundly derided by most people for years, chuckling that a vote for UKIP is a wasted vote “because we can’t win”. How times have changed. But the thing is we won the argument years ago and now people are waking up to the fact that all three Westminster parties have lied to us for 40 years about the EU project, saying over and over again that this treaty and that treaty don’t represent any loss of sovereignty, and denying It is quite scandalous how we have been deceived. I don’t blame the EU, I blame successive UK governments for continuing to be a part of something so wholly contrary to what most British people hold dear. For generations we have been a proud, stand-alone nation state that the whole world respects and admires. We have huge influence in the world just because we are, well, the UK. Our Queen is revered almost as Queen of the world wherever she goes, and crowds turn out to cheer her simply because she is Queen of Great Britain. But the EU doesn’t like countries like ours. They don’t want proud nation states any more, but just one, the Federal State of Europe, so they have encouraged unfettered movement of people across Europe in order to mix us all up into one indistinguishable soup that loses all national identity. And it has happened. I, and everyone else in UKIP don’t go along with it and that does not make us a nasty right wing party. We are not against immigrants at all, just against the policy that was not decided by those we voted into government but by unelected people in Brussels with an agenda.
