Or Dinesh D’Souza, who made the stunning “2016: Obama’s America” in the run-up to the 2012 election, and now is on the “defendant” end of a couple of federal campaign donation charges. Or others. So WND has launched a petition demanding that persecution of high-profile Obama critics, including Carson, the famed neurosurgeon, D’Souza, “True the Vote” founder Catherine Engelbrecht and others be halted. It states: To: The United States Congress Whereas, neurosurgeon Ben Carson, M.D., famously criticized the destructive policies of Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., with a humiliated Obama sitting just a couple of seats away from Carson, the keynote speaker; Whereas, Carson never had any problem with the Internal Revenue Service until he spoke out against President Obama, after which he was immediately targeted by the IRS with a massive audit (in which the IRS ultimately found nothing); Whereas, author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza was one of Barack Obama’s highest-profile critics in the election year of 2012, when his film documentary “2016: Obama’s America” earned more than $33 million, becoming the fourth highest-grossing documentary ever. And his upcoming film, “America” – a celebration of American exceptionalism and a devastating rebuttal to the progressive left’s angry portrayal of America as a nation based on greed, theft and perpetual exploitation – is due in theaters across the country July 4, 2014; Whereas, the minor campaign-finance crime of which D’Souza is accused is seldom prosecuted, yet the Obama Justice Department is making a big show – threatening him with seven years in prison, seizing his passport and setting his bond at an extraordinary $500,000, higher than that given to people accused of attempted murder, rape and assault; Whereas, Dr. Ben Carson characterizes D’Souza’s prosecution as an example of Obama administration officials “acting like the Gestapo,” adding, “I believe we are dealing with an extremely corrupt administration”; Whereas, “2016′s” producer, Academy Award-winner Gerald R. Molen, who worked closely with Steven Spielberg and produced five of his films including “Schindler’s List,” says: “When Dinesh D’Souza can be prosecuted for making a movie, every American should ask themselves one question: ‘What will I do to preserve the First Amendment?’”; Whereas, famed liberal law professor Alan Dershowitz calls it “clearly a case of selective prosecution for one of the most common things done during elections, which is to get people to raise money for you. If they went after everyone who did this, there would be no room in jails for murderers”; Whereas, Sen. Ted Cruz calls prosecutions like D’Souza’s an “abuse of power from this administration. We’ve seen multiple filmmakers prosecuted and the government’s gone after them – whether it was the poor fellow that did the film that the president blamed Benghazi and the terrorist attack on … [or] Dinesh D’Souza, who did a very big movie criticizing the president”; Whereas, Catherine Engelbrecht, president and founder of the election integrity group True the Vote, recently testified before a congressional committee about IRS targeting both her group and her personal business; Whereas, Engelbrecht delivered the following shocking testimony: “Shortly after filing IRS forms to establish 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) tax exempt organizations, an assortment of federal entities including law enforcement agencies and a congressman from Maryland, Elijah Cummings, came knocking at my door. In nearly two decades of running our small business, my husband and I never dealt with any government agency, outside of filing our annual tax returns. We had never been audited, we had never been investigated, but all that changed upon submitting applications for the nonprofit statuses of True the Vote and King Street Patriots. Since that filing in 2010, my private businesses, my nonprofit organizations, and family have been subjected to more than 15 instances of audit or inquiry by federal agencies”; Whereas, Engelbrecht was audited not only by the IRS, but also by the ATF, and received multiple visits by OSHA and ATF. “I found myself a target of this federal government,” she said; Whereas, the prosecution of political foes is not only extremely unseemly, but creates an extraordinarily chilling effect on all dissent, befitting a totalitarian state, not a free one; Whereas, Barack Obama’s administration is already widely regarded as the “payback presidency” – rewarding friends and supporters, while punishing opponents, including the Obama IRS specifically targeting not just Engelbrecht’s organization, but literally hundreds of conservative and tea party groups; Sign the petition today! Therefore, we the undersigned urge the following actions be taken: An immediate halt to the Obama administration’s reign of “payback” and “punishment” levied against its political opponents, which it regards as “enemies”; and a congressional investigation into the administration’s unmistakable and undeniable pattern of political use of the fearsome machinery of government to punish critics and opponents – which is not only grossly illegal and immoral, but profoundly destructive of everything that makes America exceptional and free.
