WORKLL SOON BEGIN ON GOMBE-KALTULNGO ROAD The Federal Government has said that contract for the construction of the Gombe-Kaltungu would start as soon its design and other details are perfected. This is even as it gave the assurance that rehabilitation work on Gombe-Biu road is on the pipeline. Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, said this when the Governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dankwambo paid him courtesy call in his office at Mabushi in Abuja. Onolememen told Dankwambo that the Federal Government would make good its promise to under World Bank intervention and would come on stream very soon”. On the issue of reimbursement to the state government for the construction of some federal roads in Gombe, the minister assured the governor that the ministry would ensure that the state gets reimbursed as soon as due processes are followed. He said, “The guidelines for state intervention on federal roads are very clear and states are expected to comply with the guideline. It has been gazetted as part of laws of Nigeria and has been circulated to all the states of the federation and once any state complies with the guideline, we won’t have any problem reimbursing them”. “About N8bn was paid to state governments during the last quarter of last year out of the first phase of refund to state governments. Gombe State has demonstrated how to truly partner with the federal government to bring dividends of democracy to the people”. Earlier, Governor Dankwambo commended the Federal Government for its intervention on the Gombe by-pass stressing that before government’s intervention, heavy duty vehicles used to cause lots of accidents on the road. He added that with the construction of the by-pass, traffic had been diverted outside Gombe while the rate of accident had reduced. Dankwambo however requested for Federal Government’s intervention on Mile 3 to the roundabout road which he said, requires minor repairs to prevent eventual collapse of the road. The governor also commended the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, for various interventions in Gombe State. “We have linked all our Local Government Areas with roads, giving rural arrears priority. We have completed about 168 roads spanning 638km of roads and we are keying into the infrastructure master plan of the federal government,” he said.
