WORKOUT TIP: Seated rows are a great exercise for the whole back, but a lot of people do them poorly. Firstly, you should never use momentum to row like you would on a cardio rower, that defeats the purpose of the exercise and can also potentially risk injury. To work your middle and upper back keep your spine neutral and upright, and dont allow yourself to lean forward and back at the hips or to arch your back as you row. Keep your chest high and engage your core. At the forward end of the row rotate your shoulders as far forward as possible, as if youre trying to lengthen your arms as much as you can. Then as you row back, focus on pulling your shoulders back and your shoulder blades together. Thats where the majority of the exercises benefit will happen. Youll find that your shoulder blades come together very quickly early in the movement, before your elbows even flex much. As you continue to row and your elbows come further back it will allow your shoulder blades to move a bit closer together still, to get even more benefit from the row. - Fabian.
