WOW! Latest food solution for Cocos Islands hits ABC news. The group aim to secure funding, plant a crop, study it for a few more years, then mechanical harvest this crop (cause they dont want to create any jobs), release its potential in another report to save the planet and cocos islands, secure more funding to link it with hmmm local food solutions, then what? Then ship up a milling machine to turn the grain into powder to then feed it to the fish (aquaponics), to then grow fruit and veg for the islands and why not make some chicken feed out of it as well to please the locals with chickens! I thought all this insanity stopped after the govt phased out the economic development position. The only sense to this article was from Kerenda Keogh (in the audio interview) stating the facts of expensive food prices. The solution is land farming (using bio waste - its already here), hydroponics and maybe aquaponics (just ship in the fertiliser), all will create immediate jobs and possibly long term jobs based on the success and local support of the crops grown. They carry on as if we have 100 hectares of land ready to use for Stage 3! It will be great to read the science behind the soil improvement claims after .001 of a hectare trial from Stage 1. Stage 2 is based on approx 2 hectares of existing farming land that has been off limits to locals for over 10 years! I think they have $150K from 2013 and after another sum to continue the madness for 2015 to 2020... Whats wrong with spending some money to create real jobs to export products and to create local sustainable food systems?
