JULY 19 PEACE LUNCH FEATURING PROFESSOR ANASTASIOU Professor Anastasiou will speak on the EU as a Novel System of Governance for Peace and Democracy: Achievements and Challenges. The presentation will highlight how the EU process of integration and institution building help transform Europe from a region of war and violence to one of peace and stability. It will focus on the novel institutions of the EU, the idea of economic and political integration, the expansion of citizen rights beyond the nation state and the process of enlargement as an instrument of expanding peace, democracy and wellbeing. The new challenges facing the EU today will be addressed as well, particularly the debt crisis and possible pathways forward. PSU Professor Harry Anastasiou Harry Anastasiou is professor of International Peace and Conflict Studies at Portland State University. He has taught, published and lectured widely on nationalism, ethnic conflict, multi-dimensional peacebuilding, and international peace and conflict issues. He has designed and facilitated innumerable interethnic conflict-resolution workshops, policy developing think tanks, dialogue groups, and peace-enhancing projects and programs. For two decades, he has been playing a leading role in peace-building initiatives engaging Greek and Turkish citizens and policy leaders from Greece, Turkey and ethnically divided Cyprus. Professor Anastasiou has been an invited lecturer for The International Visitor Leadership Program of the US Department of State. In 2012 he has been invited as a consultant by the Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the US Department of State to help brief the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, focusing on the current state of the Cyprus conflict, the impact of regional developments and possible strategies toward the resolution of this protracted interethnic conflict. He has also been an invited frequent lecturer for the “Great Decisions” series of the World Affairs Council, and has been included in the organization’s annual Recommended Speakers Book since 2007. In 2010 he was appointed by Rotary International as an academic advisor and subsequently as member of the Rotary Peace Centers Committee, to serve until 2015. In 2012, he served as District Chair of Peacebuilder Clubs in Rotary District 5100, while in 2013 he helped launched the Rotarian Action Group of Peace as one of its founding directors.
