WWA Project Update: Project Director Peter got this nice note in the old e-mail bag this week, from Dan Schultz, of Fremont: The pond is now full. Geese have been using it for the last two weeks (prior geese never used this field). Pond is still frozen but the edges seem to thaw every day from the warmth of the sun. Seems like it is starting to achieve our goal. Thanks for all your help. It’s exciting to see the birds starting to use it already. Can’t wait for it to warm up to get the seeds planted around it. Sounds pretty good, right? The best part is that this project was done just barely two months ago! Peter comments: This was done in January in Outagamie County. Pheasants Forever and the County helped in partnership. An 8 acre field was restored through installation of a scrape and drain tile removal. The area will be seeded with a permanent cover for food and nesting this spring. It is adjacent to a small creek that had some wood duck use, but this will increase species use by mallards, geese, and possibly teal. It was very cold , so theres not many pictures. In one picture you can see the line of one of the tile trench where the tile was removed and filled back in.
