WYSO’s Shakin’ Dave Hussong to be honored Blues acts playing Gilly’s Posted: 12:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 BY DON THRASHER - CONTRIBUTING WRITER DAYTON DAILY NEWS When it came time to honor Dave Hussong’s three decades of spinning tunes on his Monday evening “Hall of Fame Blues” program on WYSO-FM (91.3), the Dayton Blues Society organized an all-star evening of talent. A who’s who of local blues acts such as The Doug Hart Band, Low Rent Blues, Noah Wotherspoon and Brian K. Wallen will perform at “Shakin’ Dave Hussong: 30 Years in Broadcasting” at Gilly’s in Dayton on Friday. Hussong, who began playing music locally in the 1960s and opened his business Fretware Guitars in the early 1970s, recently discussed honor at Gilly’s, the power of radio and his introduction to WYSO. Q: How does it feel to be recognized like this by the Dayton Blues Society? A: “I’m deeply appreciated and humbled by it. I feel very lucky to still be at WYSO after 30 years. It’s been my bully pulpit. It’s been my saving grace. It’s been my reason to exhale.” Q: When were you first captivated by radio? A: “My love for voices on the radio goes way, way back. I grew up on local DJs like Dave Hall, Gene Berry and Bob Holiday. They were early influences to a degree. The guys that really got me were the DJs I could pick up after 9 o’clock at night on WLAC (out of Nashville). Big Hugh, John Richbourg, Herman Grizzard and all those guys were Caucasians, but they had an affinity for all of these experiences I had no idea I was striving for but I guess I was.” Q: What attracted you to WYSO? A: “Art Snyder is the reason I’m on WYSO. I got to hear him in the early ’70s, and I had a lot of respect for him. He played what he called downhome blues, and the more obscure the better. If the guy recorded it and then sold it out of the trunk of his car, that was great. Art came up with some people that really raised the hair on my back.” Q: How did you get from listener to radio host? A: “Art invited me to ’YSO one Sunday afternoon. This is an absolute true story. He was on the air. I was sitting there — and I idolize the cat, I just love him — he said, ‘Come over here and sit down.’ He sat me in his chair, put the headset on my head and walked out. That was my initial experience with being on the air. I have Art Snyder to thank for all of this.” ________________________________________ How to go What: “Shakin’ Dave Hussong: 30 Years in Broadcasting” featuring the Doug Hart Band, Low Rent Blues, Noah Wotherspoon, Brian K.
