Wading into politics on Facebook is always a little dangerous but - TopicsExpress

Wading into politics on Facebook is always a little dangerous but now that I have a daughter the stakes are higher for me and therefore feel it is time for me to get involved in government again. Whether I eventually run for something or not will be a decision my family and I make together but I do feel that our government is going off its rocker and I can’t sit back and remain silent. Under no circumstances can we afford to allow our nation to default on its debt. While I myself am glad all Americans have access to health care I do have some serious concerns about the Affordable Care Act. However it is the constitutional law of the land and should not be used to take our country hostage like it is being used by the Tea Party. As for the Tea Party as a whole, I applaud their activism and their belief that we must get our government financial house in order but with that being said sending our country into a cataclysmic financial mess is not the way to do it. It is irresponsible and wrong for America. Congress needs to pass a clean Continuing Resolution opening the government again and must increase the debt ceiling so that our economy can continue to gain momentum. We must then all work together to truly come up with a long term solution that is fair to all Americans but that also begins to put us on a path to fixing our national deficit and debt. It will be hard and tough choices will have to be made but we must act on this and only by all of us working together for the good of our country and not party will we be able to achieve this. I do believe it is possible and we must get it done. Now with all that said I know what I am suggesting will be hard. However I do believe there are some things we can do as a country to help us be able to start electing leaders that put the country first over their own careers and parties. The first is a constitutional amendment for term limits. It is wise that the President can only serve for two terms and we need to do the same for members of congress. I believe that members of Congress should be able to serve for four two year terms and Senators for two six year terms. This will enable our leaders to truly be public servants and not career politicians which hopefully will in turn give them a greater incentive to work together to get things done for the good of the country. The second thing we need to do is to pass a constitutional amendment calling for a Bi-Partisan taskforce to meet every ten years after the census to draw Congressional district lines for the whole country. Gerrymandering has had its place in American life but now too many districts are drawn to protect those that serve in them creating too many safe seats that draw their representatives to the extremes both liberal and conservative. We need more districts that are not drawn for political reasons but because they make sense by keeping communities and neighborhoods together. It is ridiculous that we have neighborhoods that are split up so much that they sometimes could have 3 congress people. This is crazy and needs to change for the good of our country. We need common sense leaders not just ones driven solely by extreme ideology. Both of the above ideas are not democrat or republican but I think will be good for everyone. There will be those that say these things cannot be done but together we must try to fix what day in and day out seems like a broken system. I know to both parties these ideas are not going to be welcomed ones. I also know that these changes alone will not fix our problems but I feel they are a good start. We have created a system in Washington where people are accumulating lots of money and power because of how things are run. However it is not working for the American people and therefore must change. Anyway these are just some ideas. I am not trying to start an argument with anyone just trying to share some thoughts I have had as I watch the goings on in DC. Thanks for reading.
