Waiting Upon The Lord February 1 What does God look like? We call God, “Father,” though we know that God has no gender, perhaps because we need some frame of reference which fits into something understandable. Jesus, lamenting over Jerusalem talks about God as a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wing. It would be a mistake to call God ‘Father’ and assume we were identifying gender instead of capturing a relationship. It is often said that a child’s first conception of God is mediated through his/her relation with an earthly father. And herein lies a dilemma; some of us had fathers who were far from godly, our relationship with that father far from peace-filled. So perhaps when we pray the Our Father, we are referencing our collective hope of what an ideal father should be. Still, this does not convey the fullness of the relationship a child should have with its parent. When Jesus addressed God he used the term abba, which we translate as ‘father,’ but which should maybe be more properly translated,’daddy.’ It is a child’s term which has about it the feel of total dependence, unquestioning trust, and the tenderness of loving intimacy.
