Walking the Planes Top 8 Sketches - 12/20/14 Number 5: Battle of Wits” It’s not often that a random comment on someone’s blog entry profoundly affects what jokes I want to write, but in this case, a follower of Mark Rosewaters tumblr “Blogatog” left a comment that burned an image in my mind. “You remind me of Vizzini from the Princess Bride. Has anyone else ever told you that?” I couldn’t get that image out of my head. Mark Rosewater just IS Vizzini. There are two types of people in this world: those who have seen The Princess Bride, and those who should watch it as soon as possible. I could talk about how it’s a heart-warming tale of love, revenge, left-handed sword fights, and Andre the Giant’s rhyming skills, but I’m assuming most of you have seen it already and love it as much as I do. It’s really rare that a comedy from the 80s holds up so well over time. So, Vizzini has a dialogue-driven scene at a TABLE (Magic is played on tables!) showcasing a battle of wits with a MAN IN BLACK and that an all-time beloved card called Battle of Wits was also Standard-legal at the time? How could we not do this scene? Again, you need to be familiar with TPB to get these references. And like the film, the jokes are not so much played for laughs, but rather wry smiles. The scene “takes its time” because it’s more of an homage than a sketch. Nonetheless, Mark and I have talked about how our Spy vs. Spy-esque rivalry will be hard pressed to top this one. Enjoy! Number 4 tomo— what? Is that David Williams??? Sorry, could’ve sworn I just saw Dave. Number 4 tomorrow! youtu.be/T5Omku_xC6A?t=15m27s
