Wallis Summer Palm Window This summer the trend was very definitely palm prints and this was reflected in many of the high street window schemes. The Wallis summer palm window was one of the first to cleverly use the print in the window giving a real wow factor. The window scheme was a retail design exercise in visual Merchandising (VM) to reflect the summers palm print trend and to evoke the feeling of summer. The initial brief called for a very clean uncluttered and slightly abstracted interpretation of the brief. This displayed two styles of oversized sculptural palm leaves, both the same dimensions, with one having a mirrored HIPS finish and the second an etched green acrylic finish. Each leafs construction was based around a mild steel frame form to give the leaf an organic curve. The central tube was used to provide the individual petal support, welded to a precise layout. The supports where adjusted at install again to perpetuate the organic form of the leaf. Each support had incorporated in their construction, cylindrical fixing pads. The leaves where positioned on these pads and supported using a tension wire fixing which where discrete and secure. The window scheme still needed to evoke the feeling of summer and sunshine, this was done by giving the palms shadows, which where printed onto the back wall. In each stores case, a light box sheen, a vinyl decal or a printed acetate. This gave the effect that the palm leaf props in the window where actually casting the shadows onto the back wall. The window was given further depth by the addition of graphic being applied directly to the window. The scheme was effective for displaying the high summer fashions amongst a slightly abstracted tropical scene. ow.ly/zxOpH
