Warning: #GradSchoolRant ... So, received spring/summer 14 teaching evaluations today. As always, it was good to get students perspectives about the class and, for the most part, their comments were constructive (some were even complimentary). Heres the thing, though... the ones who voice their displeasure about the timeliness of the feedback. These folks clearly just misunderstand quite a few things. I mean, as a Ph.D. student-Teaching Assistant, I only have to... prep for the classes I teach, teach those classes, respond to the numerous emails about class, attend office hours (and sometimes make special appointments to meet with students outside of normal office hours), prepare for the classes that I take, show up to those classes with something meaningful to contribute, conduct research for those classes, translate that research into a coherent, written piece of scholarship, continue to develop ongoing scholarly projects, prepare research for conference/journal submission, attend conferences, continue to make progress toward completing the doctoral degree (comprehensive exams, dissertation proposal, etc.), and fulfill my professional development/service obligations... and, then, maybe (just maybe) be a decent husband/son/brother/friend... but, yeah, by all means, feel free to whine about the fact that your paper was returned to you like a day or two later than you wouldve liked. Only seems fair.
