Warning, the last picture is a bit graphic... There are those who say gestation crates and farrowing crates are cruel and should not be allowed. Here is the reason they exist. Tims sow had babies today, shes a bit old and cranky, doesnt get along with some of the other sows. I would guess that she got into a scuffle in her third trimester, and a placenta detached. She had 9 live and 7 stillborn. I personally like the system Murphy Brown (a factory farm) is going to with stalls a sow can go into, which means she can get away from aggressive sows. Those of you who havent dealt with pigs (or other large animals) please understand that people who run farms (of any size) DO have the animals best interests in mind. Dont believe the PETA and HSUS propaganda and react emotionally to a situation that you dont have full knowledge of. Situations like this are the reason farms evolved to include things like gestation crates that seem odd and cruel to people who dont have to deal with 45% stillborns. Next time you hear someone criticize a practice, please look at both sides, its easy to side with the emotional plea, but consider why farmers do what they do.
