Was Michael Ruppert Wrong? By: Matthew Gilman In 2014 news circulated around the internet that Michael Ruppert, an investigative reporter, had committed suicide. He was the creator of a independent news letter titled From the Wilderness. He was also the main subject of a documentary titled Collapse. The subject of Collapse was the idea that the world as we know it was going into a steady decline. A collapse was coming that would end the world as we know it. The subject was peak oil and economics. With the recent fracking oil boom we have seen in our country I could not help but ask the question if perhaps he was wrong. Today there are several countries that had listened to the warnings of people with the same message as Ruppert. Germany now receives more than 25% of their power from solar and wind. Greenland has 100% of their power come from renewable energy. What is interesting is that the countries with a larger portion of their energy coming from renewable energy also have the fastest growing and most stable economies in the world. The oil boom of the Dakotas has given America a idea that we are now energy independent. As the number one supplier of oil in the world one could confidently think that our energy problems have been solved. Instead there is a much different reality that they do not know. Fracking is only a temporary solution. The oil that is pumped from fracking wells only produces for 5-15 years. After that the wells no longer produce. In addition to that the process to access that oil also contaminates the well water in those areas. There are plenty of videos on youtube of people who are able to light their drinking water on fire. Gasoline is currently as low as $1.68 a gallon where I live. Of course I am happy to fill my gas tank for under $20. While this has helped add money to the average Joe’s wallet and given some benefit to the economy I can’t help but wonder if there is a price we will have to pay later. The last time gas prices had dropped as fast as they have this year was in 2008, not long before the financial collapse. Will history repeat itself? I can understand why someone at this time might think that Michael Ruppert was wrong. With things going so well why wouldn’t they? Change is the only thing constant in life and this great economic prosperity will not last. I don’t want to be a downer but I also don’t want everyone to be caught with their defenses down. I’m not sure if this is the calm before the storm. I have a feeling there is going to be many storms and quiet periods between. At the moment I try to make sure that I invest my money wisely and prepare for most financial troubles that could be ahead. Sadly the best times and easiest times we live through are the times when we think we are the safest. Do I think Michael Ruppert was wrong? No. I’m sad he is not here with us today. I know that Ruppert didn’t have all of the answers. There is no way for someone to be able to figure out how to correct everything that is going on. The fracking boom we are seeing in our country is only a temporary band aid to the energy problem we face. Ten years from now when the reserves of the Saudis and the wells in the Dakotas are running dry there is going to be a serious problem that people are not going to want to face. Michael Ruppert wasn’t wrong. What he was predicting is still happening. The only thing that changed is that the end result has been delayed for another decade or so. Congratulations, you have more time to prepare, use it wisely.
