Was on my way to Chromepet on Sunday(Dec 7, 2014) evening with my Brother in his car via Airport. The traffic was moderate at Pallavaram. The moment we crossed the Pallavaram signal, about 100 feet away, Cops stopped our car along with couple of cars, which were the last set Vehicles to pass that signal. My brother steered the car to the left of road and asked what was the offence. The cops said Signal Violation, you came when the Signal was not in Green. We were surprised because there was no Traffic constable in that signal and vehicles were passing randomly. Suddenly my brother said,The signal was not proper, I Couldnt see any signal, hence followed the MTC Bus that was going in front of me. Now again the cop went to the middle of the road and caught next batch of vehicles for the same offence. This repeated for 3 or 4 batch of vehicles that were passing that signal. And people who were caught before us for the same violation were pleading. There would be some 10-15 people for Signal Violation. I felt something fishy was happening, walked back to the signal. To my surprise the Signal was malfunctioning, The Green light was not glowing when it was suppose to glow, only the Orange and yellow lights were flickering like disco lights, which were hardly noticeable. The reason why Motorists couldnt follow the signal. I took a video of this Malfunctioning signal and politely said there is a fault in the Signal sir, not our fault. The Cops didnt listen and continued stopping motorists for the same offence. Again I defended the fellow motorists saying, Sir, It is the Duty of a Traffic police to Control the traffic when a Signal is malfunctioning, not standing some 100 feet away from the signal, catching the innocent motorists and threatening them to pay fine. The cops felt insulted and couldnt accept the fact that they were wrong in front of so many people. The sergeant kept on threatening to pay a fine of Rs.700/- and leave or else our Car would be impounded. The argument went on for a while. He was trying different dialogues to threaten which didnt work. Unable to bear the insult, One of the constables started abusing me in local language, He said,When you are hit by a Vehicle and lie on road, I should only come and pick your body, Dont teach me what my duty is. (Nee Road la adipattu seththa naan dhaan vandhu vaarittu poganum. En duty enna nu enakku solladha.) I repeatedly warned him to mind his tongue as he was wearing the Garland for Sabarimala. After repeated warnings I lost my cool n blasted,It is because of Rogues like you the Law and Order in our nation is messed up. You guys are unfit to be in the Police Department. You are Unsafe to the public. The other constable knew things were going out control and suddenly realized (assumed is the right word) that I was using my Mobile phone Camera to shoot the happenings. Shit was totally out of them. Out of fear they removed their Name badges, Stopped catching the vehicles for Signal Jumping. The fellow so called Signal Violaters left the scene happily. Moments later they Caught an old Indica for Tinted Glass. The Indica driver was a Middle Class common man who had no courage to talk back. Behind the Indica was a Fortuner with Jet Black windows and a Politcal partys flag. I challenged them,If you have the guts and balls, stop the Fortuner guy now for Tinted Glass and collect spot-fine from him. The 2nd constable called me to the side and said,Sir, my colleague(the constable who abused me) is behaving like a Psycho and I very well agree to all your points and you were right!!! I apologize for all that happened. Then he took his Mobile phone, called the station and requested them to send an extra Constable to regulate the Traffic at that point. He promised that the malfunctioning signal would be fixed by morning. He escorted me to the car, ensured that I was cool and said, Regarding the Fortuner Guy, My family is in Tanjavur, I have 2 small kids who go to school, if I mess up with politicial people, wholl take care of my Children? he gently closed the car’s door, went towards my brother in a convincing voice and said, please tell Sir not to upload any video on Facebook or Youtube.
