Washington Post Politics just launched a new vertical called Storyline. Heres one of the first entries. A few issues: 1) If you live in America, this shouldnt be news. Undocumented immigrants are mostly integrated into the informal economy, their undocumented children exist in a precarious but optimistic situation regarding citizenship, and their American-born children are fully integrated Americans. This is a lived experience for Americans who grow up outside of the bubble where your only experience with undocumented immigrants is when theyre the help. 2) Existing immigration policy means these families, which feature varying levels of legal status, stand to benefit on a huge level from their semi-documented teens gaining citizenship. This story fails to note that fact.
