Wasnt going to post this till tomorrow but gotta get it out. Firstly very proud by the turnout and engagement (especially in Glasgow, which is not noted for engagement in recent years having felt largely by-passed by all parties) but deeply saddened by the decision and more so by Alec Salmonds exit from his post. Love him or hate him - you have to respect him as one of the most informed intelligent and articulate politicians of our time - who else will now be capable of running rings round Jeremy Paxman! The silent majority have spoken and in the true democratic spirit of our country this must be respected. However I would argue that perhaps we now stand more divided than ever before with the urban poor in the main areas of deprivation in Glasgow and Dundee - the traditional labour heartlands - rejecting labour - despite the intervention of Gordon Brown et all, to vote for real change that would have directly changed and improved their lives.(Ask anyone in a high rise in Maryhill who simplistically described the no voters as all f*****ckin Tories - and may well proved to be absolutely right as events unfold) My worst fear however is that in our well intended drive for change for the better, that given the phenomenal turnout, we have not awakened the sleeping masses as we expected, but rather the sleeping giant of latent conservatism (and unionism) within our borders which has thankfully been largely dormant until now! I sincerely dread the repercussions of this which will undoubtedly become clearer and more manifest in the days, weeks, months and years ahead, as this facet of our society feels more confident to raise its ugly head above the parapet and further disenfranchise the most vulnerable in our society. Time to light a candle - and HOPE!
