Waste Audit (Room 16) This is a very exciting term for Tawhai School in terms of rubbish. We will be starting a new recycling programme soon but before we got that started had to figure out how much rubbish we were actually creating. Phoenix’s recount tells us how we went about counting the rubbish. On Tuesday the 22nd of July Tawhai School had a waste audit with three people from the Sustainability Trust Wellington came into school and this is what happened. The day before our caretaker, Lloyd, had collected all the rubbish from that day and there was A LOT . In the hall we were sorted into groups of eight that would come to help sort the rubbish group by group. The first 5 groups went along fine but the 5th and 6th groups couldn’t go because we were running out of rubbish, oh no!!! In the end the Enviro Kids from those groups got to go instead. There was a lot of uneaten food like apples, bananas, oranges, muesli bars, sandwiches and even toys!!! We went from about 10 or 12 bags to just four bags and only one of them had to go to the tip and the rest could be recycled! It’s AMAZING that Tawhai School only needs to send one bag of rubbish to the tip each day. By Phoenix Harvie I think what we can take away from this waste audit is that there is a lot of room for improvement. The lovely ladies who helped with our waste audit are going to be back in touch with some recommendations of things we can do differently to help manage our waste better. Thank you to the Sustainability Trust for helping us out and we hope that when you come back at the end of the year we will have A LOT less waste! Watch this space to find out how we go about reducing waste levels at Tawhai School!
