Wat Kaew Korawaram, Krabi Town: This large Buddhist temple - TopicsExpress

Wat Kaew Korawaram, Krabi Town: This large Buddhist temple overlooks Krabi downtown and its origins date back to 1887. The temple sits atop a majestic staircase lined by golden Naga sculptures (mythical serpents to guard the stairs and keep watch over Buddha). While I find every temple in Thailand a little different from the last, this wat was truly uniqe, featuring white walls and blue tiled roof...which has resulted in it being nicknamed the wedding cake. Typically, Thai Buddhist temples are red and gold. Alongside the stairway, was a lovely, hillside garden..plete with a pond, wild animal statues, a beautiful, big old Bhodi tree, and, as usual, a few soi dogs looking for an ear scratch. Most temple grounds have Bhodi trees...in Buddhist tradition Buddha achieved illumination (bhodi) while sitting in meditation under a variety of fig tree, since known as the Bhodi Tree. While wandering the grounds of this temple we came across a crematorium, easily recognizable by its high chimney (most Thai Buddhists prefer cremation to burial). Nearby, we also discovered a memorial site with several monuments, some very elaborate - housing the ashes of many family members, some with nothing more than a clay figurine, a vase and some dried flowers.
