Watch Site of the Week: Muro dei Francesi is located in Ciampino near Rome and its occupation dates to ancient Roman times. Archaeological discoveries include remains of a villa with sculptures and a swimming pool, believed to belong to the estate of general Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus and dating to the first century B.C. An estate was built on the site by the prominent Colonna family in the seventeenth century, which still stands today. Encroaching development threatens the site, and an integrated management plan is needed to protect cultural heritage sites in Ciampino, including Muro dei Francesi.
