Watch Site of the Week: The neo-classical Church of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette was built in 1823 and 1836. Louis-Hippolyte Lebas won the design competition for the building and took inspiration from the plans of ancient Christian basilicas. A monumental entrance portico surmounted by a pediment with sculpted figures of Faith, Hope, and Charity dominates the church’s exterior. The sober stone gives no hint of the richly painted decoration covering every surface inside the church, and the colorful interior shocked Parisians with its extravagance when the church first opened. Both this church and Saint Merri are under the care of the City of Paris, but like many significant but lesser-known churches, they do not have the resources available to them for adequate conservation and maintenance.
