Watched ‘this is us’ in the morning. Realised that it’s not a movie but a documentary on 1 Direction and a couple of other things – 5 points in respect of the 5 1Ds 1. Secret to success – simple sells - Simple tunes (for anyone even with the least sense of singing) - Catchy music (light & feet tapping) 2. Charm wins - Charming (no doubt sweet) - Unassuming (no doubt appealing) - No skill beyond looking cute and able to sing (at least, none exposed in the documentary) 3. People love the result, not the effort - Entire documentary shows the group having fun and enjoying the adulation of frenzied fans - No hint of the hard work that goes behind success (except that one sister mentions this is only the fifth day that he is home since he went to X Factor two and a half years ago) - No mention of the efforts of other team players – especially the musicians 4. Teenage girls – a new world force – Directioners - Add the power of social media - Except for the 5 singers, the only males in the entire documentary were security guards, facility organisers and random tourists – I guess I should ignore the single male fan, their parents, the team organiser and a 45-55 year old baldie with every group of 4-10 girls in the audience (says a lot about their age, right?) - The power to control a few thousand teenage girls (at one time) by the wave of a finger – for starters it could mean a windfall in endorsements 5. ‘Like’ can replace not only umm and aa but many other adverbs and verbs in English DGN 29 Aug 2013 London 1115-1300 hrs PS: Coming to think of it, I’ve never been able to experience the extreme hysteria (bordering on orgasmic, as some would say) that the fans (Directioners) displayed throughout the movie. Maybe something is just wrong with me or I was never adequately passionate about anything in my life.
