Watching from the mountains, where we had a perfect view of the entire city, memories of my childhood remind me of the moment we stood at the patio of our house in Kessab, Syria, while my father pointed out the trees of our beautiful garden; a little further away, he showed the neighboring cities and we were amazed by the glowing lights; and further on he noted, that’s the border of Turkey. As a child, I wondered, “wow! They are so close. Can they attack us?” At a young age, I was educated about our history and the crimes committed by the Turks against Armenians. I knew that we were victims where we had found salvage outside of our lands. Who knew that 20 years later my worst childhood fear, which then seemed so ingenuous, would somehow become a reality. Turkey has reportedly allowed hundreds of radical foreign fighters to cross its border and attack the civilian population in Kessab, Syria. Within days of the onslaught launched from Turkey, nearly the entire population of Christian Armenians has fled to neighboring cities, Latakia and Ras Bassit, to avoid slaughter. Is this the destiny of the Armenian People? The Armenian Genocide occurred 99 years ago where Armenians were exiled from their historic homelands through forced deportations driven onwards to the deserts DerZor, Syria, during which 1.5 million of them were massacred... Now, almost a century later, when justice has not yet been served, are we facing a second Genocide? NO! We will not let this happen, while we are still mourning for the loss of our ancestors. The United States now has the power to stop Turkey’s provocations and assistance to these radical groups and send a clear message that targeted military strikes against innocent civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances and a clear violation of international law. anca.org/savekessab
