Watching the letters to Mrs. Kennedy has vividly brought back memories now a half century old. I was a tween living the dream life on a tropical island in the middle of the pacific. The gift of my world was being raised in a multicultural/multiracial environment....In my utopian lifestyle I had no clue about segregation and all the other situations so many back on the mainland were facing. It wasnt until my Dad bought a Tastee Freeze when we moved back to Pensacola and we were painting the bathrooms that I realized what many of my black friends had faced. We took the Woman sign off the door and under the sign was the word colored. I remember my parents conversation with me, and they probably still remember the horror on my face as I listened. President Kennedy has always been my favorite president but tonight when I finally sat down and watched how he stood for equality for all....he is my hero. Just wondering why did it took me 50 years to embrace the enormity of his service to this country. What a tragic loss it was for his young family and our country.
