Water Reading through the issue at home: water stopages and labour party position on charges Much of the water stoppages over the holidays could have been avoided if councils had upgraded the antiquated distribution network of pipes. It turns out that local authorities failed to spend €146 million that was allocated to them to invest in the water infrastructure in 2010. And after months of mixed messages the Labour Party finally made their formal position on water charges public. Before christmas in a keynote speech to the Dáil Labour Leader Eamonn Gilmore said the party supports phasing in water charges. I would urge everyone to make your opposition to water charges known to every candidate that knocks on you door in the next few weeks.
