“We are gearing up for our outdoor adventure!” That is what my husband and I have been telling our 6 & 7 year old girls for the last week, as we prepare for a Thanksgiving camping trip. Everyone is excited to be able to spend some quality time outdoors as a family. If you ask our girls what we will do, they would probably say, “we are camping, cooking, hiking, and exploring some trails we haven’t been on yet. Dad is in charge of setting up camp, and Mom is in charge of leading the hikes.” Sounds like fun, but it has been a process of teaching them how to prepare to be outside for an entire weekend. The process has included monitoring the weather. It is supposed to be cold, so that means planning for lots of layers that can be easily removed if necessary to regulate our body temperatures. Food is always an important part of camping, so we planned our menus for the trip with care. We even had a little fun with trying to plan a traditional Thanksgiving meal over the campfire. Then of course, having all the gear that we need is key to a successful trip. I am proud of the girls for being willing to explore the great outdoors, regardless of what the weather may bring. Hopefully you will be able to find some time this weekend to get outside and be thankful for what we have around us.
