We are here to support each other. Please keep the discussions respectful of others. The previous discussion topic stirred up some controversy, particularly regarding whether EFMP is or should be mandatory. Per service branches, it is mandatory, but, at least in many reports, it is individualized - parents are able to have input into assignment clearance and can appeal both denials and approvals they feel to be in error. Additionally, we hear of homeschoolers who do not use ABA who have been cleared for overseas assignments and others who choose not to use ABA to be approved for locations where it is not available. The general intention of EFMP is not to cause distress to families, on the contrary, its meant to help. Its meant to ensure that families who need services for their children arent sent to bases where those services are not available. Additionally, it isnt supposed to be a barrier to promotion or career progression. See below for links to the various sites that indicate it is a mandatory enrollment for qualifying conditions, one of which is autism spectrum disorder. Also remember that our military members are supposed to follow these directives and there can be consequences for not doing so. You are your familys best advocate. We try to ensure that families in our community know about changes, procedures and service availability and problems in locations to which they may wish to seek assignment, or have been given orders for. If the medical clearance staff are ill-informed at a base, you can (and should) educate them to the contrary, in order to achieve the best result for your family.
