“We are holding our own” These were the very last reported words of Ernest Michael McSorley, Captain of the ill-fated Great Lakes Freighter The Edmund Fitzgerald in his last radio contact with sister ship Arthur M Anderson on this night 39 years ago. On board the Edmund Fitzgerald were at least 3 Irish men, among them Capt McSorleys first mate John McCarthy. On a routine journey from Superior, Wisconsin to Detroit on November 10th, 1975, The Edmund Fitzgerald ran into one of the worst storms to hit Lake Superior in living memory. Hurricane force winds were reported with wave heights reaching as high as 20 ft. Despite maintaining contact with the Anderson during the storms peak, the Big Fitz succumbed to the shear omnipotence of mother nature leading to the loss of 29 lives. youtube/watch?v=hgI8bta-7aw
