We are honored to have none other than Matt Madden kick off our new line of mini comics with WALKER, a short piece that draws its structure from the poetic form of the sestina. The sestina’s engine is the “repeton,” the unique end-word for each of its first stanza’s six lines. Subsequent stanzas remix these repetons in particular orders. Madden offers a twist on this formula that could only work in comics, replacing words with images of exiting, entering, running, walking, jumping, and falling. As always, Madden use of constraint reveals hidden expressive potentials within the comics medium. 8 pages. 4.25” x 5.5”. Includes a brief cartoonist’s essay about the poetic constraint.
