We are offering ten activity days this summer to teach skills that will be practically useful and will build confidence, teamwork and will develop environmental awareness. Learning more about the rural environment we live in, what food grows here and how to enjoy and use the countryside around town. It will cost £25 to take part in each activity day although we do have some subsidised places (£5 and £15 depending on income — please get in touch for details) There will be two group leaders qualified and experienced in woodland skills and working with children. There will also be a volunteer supporting the activities. At least one tutor will be PVG cleared and the Ridge will undertake full risk assessments and have first aid, health and safety and other relevant policies and procedures in place. Woodland survival skills (11 – 14) Tuesday 16th July Making a shelter; Making fire safely; Gathering food; Cooking up lunch on the campfire; Make a woodland instrument; Making our own entertainment. Making a mosaic (ages 5 – 14) Wednesday 17th July Design and planning; Mosaic painting and collage to take home; Big scale drawing; Cooking up lunch on the campfire; Building the mosaic to be a permanent feature at Belhaven hospital community garden. What animals live in the woods, garden and pond? (ages 5 – 8) Monday 22nd July Hunters and gatherers game; Animals and their homes; Cooking – building a fire and making lunch; Building an insect house to donate to the school garden; Building a small insect house to take home. Mural painting transforming a shipping container (ages 9 – 14) Tuesday 30th July Design and planning; Painting to take home; Big scale drawing; Campfire cooked lunch; Big painting – bring old clothes as this will be messy!; Team photographs. What grows in our woods? (Suitable for ages 5 – 8) Thursday 1st August Treasure hunt; What can we eat? – foraging trail; Cooking camp fire lunch –Tree planting; Rubbish art – forage for rubbish dumped in the woods and make it into a work of art. Come dine with me (ages 11 – 14) Monday 5th August Planning a family 3 course meal; Shopping for ingredients; Weighing and chopping; Soupy starter; Magic mains; Delicious deserts; Presentation skills; Washing up! Take dinner for 4 home to family. Creating outdoor art (ages 5 – 14) Wednesday 7th August Designing art and sculptures in Belhaven hospital community garden; Preparing models; Making a small design to take home; Cooking up lunch on the campfire; Painting and finishing off sculptures. The woodland playground (9 – 14) Monday 12th August Bring your bike for bike trail; Treasure hunt; Cooking up lunch on the campfire; Creating a performance space; Make a woodland instrument; Camp fire music. Creating large wooden sculptures (ages:11 – 14) Wednesday 14th August Designing wood sculptures in Lochend woods; Preparing the wood; Cooking up lunch on the campfire; Building the sculptures; Donating sculptures to Belhaven hospital community garden. Building a greenhouse from empty drinks bottles (Suitable for ages: 9 – 14) Monday 19th August Design and materials; Foraging and cooking a woodland lunch; Building the greenhouse to donate to the primary school; Mini greenhouse to take home.
