We are overwhelmed with nostalgia after reading through all of the wonderful memories shared by so many people in the Our State Magazine Mountain Memories Essay Contest. Thanks to everyone who shared their fondest mountain memories with us! Congratulations to Linda from Ellenboro, NC for writing the winning essay! Weve included an excerpt so you can laugh along like we did. If you close your eyes you can almost taste the homemade biscuits and sweet tea! My parents loved the mountains. We lived in the foothills of North Carolina which is also beautiful, but nothing was as beautiful as Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Mom would pack a picnic of fried chicken, potato salad, green beans, homemade biscuits and a jug of sweet tea. There were 6 of us besides Mom and Dad. I have a picture of all my siblings standing in front of an old 48 Chevy. I was 5 years old at that time. There were always adventures happening when we went on these trips in my early years. I remember the Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain as it swayed in the wind. At five years old I was absolutely not going to cross, but I watched my siblings get on it and I began to laugh heartily as one of my older sisters got down on her hands and knees and started crawling back. The people who got on it after she did were having to turn around and come back to the end to let her off. I Remember everyone laughing and I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen!...
