Since his diagnosis he has undergone 4 surgeries and received chemotherapy to try and eradicate this disease. Roswell Park together with the VA has been in charge of his treatment. In 2008, a tumor was discovered in his leg, it was large and close to his thighbone. He underwent his first surgery and much of his upper thigh was removed in order to remove the growth. Next, he was subjected to several rounds of chemotherapy, which is so taxing on the body and spirit. Thomas made it through this process and as part of ongoing treatment was scheduled to receive body scans in order to keep an eye on things. The body scans revealed several tumors on both lungs. Surgery was scheduled to remove them immediately. The doctors removed 18 tumors total from the left lung, 14 of which were cancerous. Four weeks later they operated on his right lung, removing 12 tumors but also 65% of his lung tissue due to the depth of the tumors. Each time they operate on his lungs, they go through his back and must break his ribs to gain access. It is a painful and long recovery. He still receives body scans to continually monitor his lungs and had to undergo a 4th surgery just a few weeks ago. They removed 3 tumors and some scar tissue. This has left his family struggling financially.
